Welcome to the Premier Cooperative Residence in New Rochelle!
Nestled in the historic Wykagyl section of New Rochelle, Wykagyl Gardens is convenient to mass transport and highways, yet secluded on a 4 acre private campus. The property is surrounded by the Wykagyl Country Club, cooperative and condominium properties, and is an easy walk to the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center. Situated well back from North Avenue, Wykagyl Gardens is an oasis of peace and quiet, yet close to all amenities.  http://www.newrochelleny.com

If you are interested in architecture, Wykagyl Gardens will not disappoint! Constructed in the late 1920's in a Moorish/Spanish Mediterranian style with Arts & Crafts & Colonial Revival accents, the property is full of wonderful details from the spanish tile roofs, to terraces, juliet balconies and flower boxes built into the exterior walls. The lobbies are a marvel of 1920's design, with faience tile floors, fireplaces, and moulded plaster walls with medieval designs impressed in the plaster.

Wykagyl Gardens offers a number of important amenities if you are considering an apartment home. The campus-style affords privacy, and the large play area for children is a plus. The property has many seating areas, and boasts a wonderful private park, a shady oasis in the summer. On-site parking is generally more available than many other properties, and historically it is a short wait for a space.

The oversized apartments have many wonderful features, including log burning fireplaces in most homes; dining rooms, great closet space, high ceilings, archways and moldings!

Neighborhood shopping is an absolute breeze! Food Emporium, Starbucks, Poultry Time, Big Top and dozens more are but a brief walk.

I prepared this website because Wykagyl has been a second home for years in spirit. 25 years ago my mother was very active in selling the property, and I spent countless hours with her at the property and have continued to visit friends over the years. Kevin my associate has lived in Entrance 7 for almost 10 years and loves it. So please share our passion for this wonderful property and enjoy the site!

A Brief History of Wykagyl Gardens

Much of the documents on the early history of the property were destroyed in the City Hall fire, but records show the first building permits were issued in late June, 1928. Originally the property was suppposed to have 325 apartments, but was later scaled back possibly due to the market crash in 1929.

At the time the area was still basically farm land, with the exception of the adjoining Wykagyl Country Club which relocated to its current site in 1905, and Roosevelt School. If one looks at the location of Wykagyl Gardens today, and compares it with similar properties of the era, the location does not seem to make sense. In the 1910-1930 period, the great migration north out of New York City was undeway, made possible by the ever expanding railroads. Most apartment buildings were built close to rail stations. Thus Wykagyl's location does not seem to make sense.

Those of you who have lived here a long time know the secret. The Wykagyl Train Station of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway.     http://www.nywbry.com/history.htm

Until 1937 Wykagyl Gardens had its own train station, with the tracks and platforms running right behind the buildings where the back of the shopping center parking is now located. An view of it can be seen in Building 5's lobby, and an image from the 1950's is reproduced below.

The photograh shows a white buildng in the lower right that was the Shopwell Supermarket (which became Daitch Shopwell and moved to where CVS is now). The Shopwell building was the train terminal, and now houses the one hour photo and the sadly missed Baskin Robbins.

Remnants of the tracks existed through the 1970's in the cut that eventiually became the 1270 North Condominium. I played down there when I was a student at Roosevelt School (and was never caught!)

In 1981 the proeprty was converted from rental to cooperative ownership, which was the popular thing to do at the time. The buidlng proved to be quite popular because of the magnficent apartments and grounds, and sales went well. Improvments were made, including increasing the parking and modernizing the elevators from semi-automatic with what seemed like 500 pound manual doors, to fully automatic operation.

Today Wykagyl Gardens benefits from a watchful board and a Professional Managent Agent, who watch over the proeprty and take care of it well. The grounds and plantings are perfect!
